Before taking photos for documentation, the bones are meticulously cleaned. This process was repeated many times during the excavation.
Ester, one of Kirby’s experienced diggers, is carefully removing some of the matrix or rock to expose more of Sarah’s bones.
The group is excavating around the stegosaurus while photos are being taken to document the excavation process. The shed was brought in from a nearby site and used for equipment and bone storage at the site.
This photo shows a ground-level view of the stegosaurus. In the foreground, is a large, beautiful dorsal plate that had separated from the rest of the skeleton prior to burial and fossilization.
This is the tail section of the stegosaurus. Most of the small caudal vertebrae had already been removed when this photo was taken. Three tail spikes and some dorsal plates can be seen. The fourth tail spike was found underneathe one of the spikes shown in the photo.
